Short answer: Yes, you can get a credit card in Bangladesh without a salary account. The easiest route is a secured credit card backed by your own fixed deposit (FDR) or DPS, which almost any bank customer with savings can get. Salaried people paid into another bank can apply with six months of bank statements. Business owners can apply with a trade licence and business bank statements, freelancers with proof of foreign earnings, landlords with rental income proof, and homemakers or students through a supplementary card on a family member’s account. Every applicant needs to be at least 18, with an e-TIN and a clean CIB record.

Below, we walk through each route, the documents it needs, what to expect on limits and fees, and how to avoid rejection.

A freelancer with dollars but no salary slip

Mahfuz, a graphic designer in Khulna, earns about $800 a month from clients abroad. He wanted a credit card to pay for design software and hosting. But every bank form seemed to ask for a salary certificate he did not have, and his first application was turned down.

On his second try, he took a different approach. He opened a Tk 2 lakh fixed deposit at his bank and applied for a card secured against it. Approval took about a week. “I stopped trying to look like a salaried person,” he says, “and used the money I already had.”

What every applicant needs

Whatever route you take, Bangladesh Bank’s 2026 credit card policy requires you to be at least 18, hold an e-TIN certificate and have a clean record with the Credit Information Bureau (CIB), The Daily Ittefaq reported. Banks then need to see how you will repay: a regular income, or security such as a deposit. A salary account is just one way of showing income, not a legal requirement.

1. A secured card against your deposit (works for almost anyone)

This is the most reliable route. You open or use an existing fixed deposit (FDR) or DPS at the bank, the bank places a lien (hold) on it, and you get a credit card with a limit linked to the deposit. Because the bank is covered, it does not need to judge your income in the same way.

  • Your deposit keeps earning interest while it backs the card.
  • The limit is usually a share of the deposit, set by each bank. Ask exactly what percentage you will get.
  • You still get a monthly bill and must pay it. If you do not, the bank can recover the money from your deposit.
  • Some banks let you apply in an app. Midland Bank, for example, launched a digital secured credit card that customers can get against their DPS or FDR through its app, The Financial Express reported.

Under the 2026 policy, secured cards can have limits up to Tk 40 lakh. Typical extra documents are the FDR or DPS receipt, a letter of lien and fund-holding instructions.

2. Salaried, but paid into a different bank

If your salary goes to Bank A and you want a card from Bank B, you can still apply. Bank B will ask for a salary certificate and your recent bank statements showing the salary coming in, usually six months. Some banks set a higher income bar for customers paid elsewhere. Standard Chartered’s personal loan, for instance, asks for a minimum monthly income of Tk 26,000 from its own payroll clients but Tk 35,000 from people paid through other banks, as we found in our Standard Chartered personal loan review. Expect similar differences for cards.

3. Business owners and self-employed professionals

Business owners usually need a valid trade licence (often at least two or three years old), business bank statements for six to twelve months, and company papers if the business is a partnership or limited company. Doctors, lawyers, engineers and other professionals can use their professional certificates (such as BMDC or Bar Council) with bank statements and proof of income. Banks often ask self-employed applicants for a higher minimum income than salaried staff, so check the bank’s eligibility page first.

4. Freelancers

In December 2020, Bangladesh Bank told scheduled banks to provide loans and credit cards to IT freelancers holding the ICT Division’s freelancer ID card, The Business Standard reported. In practice, banks want to see regular foreign earnings arriving in your bank account. That is why it helps to receive your income through a bank account rather than informal channels.

Keep 6 to 12 months of statements showing inward remittances, your freelancer ID if you have one, and contracts or platform earning reports. If your income is irregular, a secured card is often faster.

Many Bangladeshi freelancers receive foreign payments through Payoneer and withdraw to a local bank account, which creates the bank record a card application needs. Our guide to getting paid from abroad compares the options.

5. Landlords, retirees and investors

Regular income does not have to be a salary. Rental income, a pension, or regular returns from savings instruments can all support an application. Bring rental agreements and ownership papers, pension documents, or statements showing the income arriving in your account, along with your tax return if you file one.

6. Homemakers and students: a supplementary card

If you have no income of your own, a family member with a credit card can add you as a supplementary cardholder. The 2026 policy allows supplementary cards for dependents aged 16 and over. The main cardholder sets your limit and is responsible for the bill. Some banks also offer student credit cards backed by a parent’s guarantee.

Do you need to show a tax return?

An e-TIN is required. Whether you must also show proof of tax return filing has changed in recent years: The Daily Star reported in 2025 that a TIN alone was enough for a credit card, but a later explainer listed card applications among cases needing a system-generated tax certificate. Ask your bank, and if you file returns, bring your latest acknowledgment. For self-employed people, a tax return is also strong proof of income.

Why applications without a salary account get rejected

  • Income paid in cash with no bank record. Banks can only count what they can see.
  • Irregular deposits with large gaps between months.
  • A trade licence that is too new or not renewed.
  • Mismatched details between your NID, e-TIN, address and bank records.
  • A negative CIB record, even from an old, small loan.
  • Too many applications at once, each triggering a CIB check.

Step by step

  1. Get your e-TIN online if you do not have one.
  2. Pick your route from the table above.
  3. Start with a bank where you already have an account or deposit.
  4. Collect 6 to 12 months of statements and your income or deposit documents.
  5. Apply for an entry-level card first; you can upgrade later.
  6. Once approved, set up auto-debit for the full bill amount.

Costs to keep in mind

  • Annual fee: from about Tk 1,000 for basic cards; some secured cards have low or waived fees.
  • Interest: up to 25% a year on any unpaid balance, the Bangladesh Bank cap.
  • Late fee: often Tk 500 to Tk 1,000, charged at most once per billing cycle.
  • Foreign transactions: conversion fees apply when you pay in dollars, important for freelancers buying software.

Back to Mahfuz

After a year of paying his secured card bill in full every month, and with his foreign earnings now arriving regularly in the same bank, Mahfuz asked about an unsecured card. The bank agreed and released the lien on part of his deposit. “The secured card was my way in,” he says. “A year of clean history did the rest.”
