What Is CIB? How Does It Affect Your Loan Application?

Every bank in Bangladesh checks your CIB report before lending to you. What the Credit Information Bureau records, what the statuses mean, how a default hurts your loan application, and how to keep or clean your record.

Short answer: CIB is the Credit Information Bureau of Bangladesh Bank, the central database of loans and credit cards held by borrowers in Bangladesh. Every bank and financial institution reports your loans to it every month, and checks your CIB report before giving you a new loan, credit card or renewal. If your report shows a loan or card that is overdue and classified as substandard, doubtful or bad, most lenders will reject your application or ask you to clear it first. A clean report, showing loans repaid on time, makes approval much easier. Even a small unpaid credit card balance can show up, because cards are reported down to Tk 1.

Below, we explain what the CIB records, what each status means, how it affects your application, and how to fix a bad record.

Rejected for a Tk 3,200 card balance

Shirin, a school administrator in Chattogram, applied for a home loan after saving for years. The bank turned her down within a week. The reason was not her income or the flat. It was an old credit card she had stopped using five years earlier, with Tk 3,200 in unpaid fees and interest she did not know about. The balance had been reported to the CIB as overdue, month after month.

“I thought I had closed it,” she says. “I had just stopped using it.” She paid it off, got a clearance letter, waited for the record to update, and reapplied.

What is the CIB?

The Credit Information Bureau was set up within Bangladesh Bank on 18 August 1992, and moved online on 19 July 2011, The Financial Express reported. Its purpose is to give lenders accurate information about a borrower’s existing loans and repayment record, so they can judge risk and avoid lending to people who are already in default.

What it records

  • Every loan and credit card you hold with banks and financial institutions: the lender, the limit or amount, and the outstanding balance.
  • Your repayment status and classification each month.
  • Loans where you are a guarantor or co-borrower.
  • Collateral information and the history of your accounts.

For credit cards, the reporting threshold was lowered from Tk 10,000 to just Tk 1, so even a tiny unpaid card balance can appear on your record.

How often it is updated

Since March 2025, banks and financial institutions must upload every borrower’s loan data by the 15th of the following month, and correct errors within seven working days. Lenders that miss the deadline without a good reason can be fined up to Tk 5 lakh, The Business Standard reported. In practice, this means changes in your repayment usually show up within about a month.

What the CIB statuses mean

StatusWhat it meansEffect on a new application
STD (Standard)Repaid on time, no problemsPositive
SMA (Special Mention Account)Overdue, but not yet classified; an early warningLenders may ask questions or wait
SS (Substandard)Overdue for more than 3 monthsUsually rejected until regularised
DF (Doubtful)Overdue for 6 to 12 monthsRejected
BL (Bad or loss)Overdue for more than 12 monthsRejected; you are a defaulter

The overdue periods for SS, DF and BL follow Bangladesh Bank’s loan classification rules effective April 2025, The Financial Express reported. SS, DF and BL loans are together called classified or non-performing loans.

How the CIB affects your loan application

1. Banks must check it

Banks check the CIB before approving or renewing loans and cards, and Bangladesh Bank keeps widening the rule. Since March 2025, banks must check the CIB for new and renewed agricultural and rural loans of any amount; previously crop loans up to Tk 2.5 lakh were exempt, bdnews24.com reported. Credit card applicants need a clean CIB report under the 2026 credit card policy.

2. A classified loan usually means no

If any loan or card in your name, or a loan you guaranteed, is classified, lenders will normally reject a new application until it is repaid or regularised.

3. Total debt matters too

Even with a clean record, the CIB shows all your existing loans and card limits. A lender adds up your current repayments to judge whether you can afford one more. Several open cards with high limits can reduce what you are offered, even if you rarely use them.

4. Being a guarantor counts

If you guaranteed a friend’s or relative’s loan and they default, the default can affect your own record and applications. Think carefully before signing as a guarantor.

5. A good record is an asset

A history of loans and cards repaid on time helps you get approval faster, and can support a request for a higher limit or better terms.

Wilful defaulters face tougher penalties

A borrower who can repay but chooses not to, or who obtained credit through fraud or misused the money, can be declared a wilful defaulter. Under a Bangladesh Bank circular of March 2024, wilful defaulters can be barred from foreign travel, new trade licences, company registration and state honours, UNB reported. Ordinary borrowers who fall behind because of genuine hardship are treated differently, but should still talk to their lender early.

How to check your CIB status

CIB reports are drawn by banks and financial institutions through Bangladesh Bank’s online system. Before a big application, ask your own bank what your CIB report shows, or ask the lender you are applying to for the reason if you are rejected. Keep your own records too: statements, closure letters and clearance letters for every loan and card you have ever had.

How to fix a bad CIB record

  1. Find out exactly what is reported: which lender, which account, and how much.
  2. If it is correct, repay or regularise it. Pay the overdue amount in full, or agree a repayment or rescheduling plan with the lender in writing.
  3. Get a clearance or closure letter once it is paid, and keep it.
  4. Allow time for the update. Banks report monthly by the 15th, so the change usually appears within about a month.
  5. If it is wrong, ask the reporting bank to correct it. Write to the bank with proof. Banks must fix errors in their submissions, and can be penalised for poor data. If the bank does not act, complain to Bangladesh Bank.
  6. Close cards properly. Stopping using a card does not close it. Ask the bank in writing to close it, pay any remaining balance and fees, and get a closure letter.

How to keep your CIB clean

  • Pay every loan instalment and card bill on time; use auto-debit.
  • Never let a small balance sit unpaid; it can still be reported.
  • Close unused cards formally and collect closure letters.
  • Avoid applying to many lenders at once.
  • Be careful about acting as a guarantor.
  • Talk to your lender before a payment becomes three months overdue, not after.

What is changing: private credit bureaus

Bangladesh is moving from a single, central bureau to several. Bangladesh Bank has issued letters of intent to private credit bureaus including Creditinfo BD, a TransUnion and bKash joint venture, First National Credit and City Credit, which will be supervised under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act 2024, according to a December 2025 analysis by MicroSave Consulting. These bureaus can use alternative data, such as mobile, utility and retail payment records, to build credit profiles for people with little or no banking history. Over time, that could make credit easier to get for people who are now invisible to lenders, and make good payment habits on bills and mobile wallets count too.

Back to Shirin

Two months after paying the old card balance, Shirin’s record showed the account as closed with nothing overdue. Her second home loan application was approved. “A Tk 3,200 mistake nearly cost me my flat,” she says. “Now I keep a folder with a closure letter for every account I have ever had.”

Frequently asked questions

What does CIB stand for?

Credit Information Bureau, a department of Bangladesh Bank that keeps records of borrowers’ loans and credit cards.

Can I get a loan with a bad CIB report?

Usually not from a bank or financial institution while a loan is classified as substandard, doubtful or bad. Repay or regularise the loan first, get a clearance letter, and wait for the record to update.

How long does it take for the CIB to update after I repay?

Banks must upload monthly data by the 15th of the following month, so an update usually appears within about a month of repayment.

Does a small credit card balance affect my CIB?

Yes. The CIB reporting threshold for credit cards is Tk 1, so even a small unpaid balance can be reported if it becomes overdue.

What if my CIB report has a mistake?

Write to the bank that reported it, with proof, and ask it to correct the data. Banks must correct errors and can be penalised for poor reporting. If the bank does not act, complain to Bangladesh Bank.

Does being a guarantor affect my CIB?

Yes. Loans you guarantee appear in the CIB, and if the borrower defaults, it can hurt your own loan applications.
