What Happens If You Miss Your Credit Card Payment?
Miss a credit card payment in Bangladesh and you face a late fee, up to 25% interest, and after three months a black mark on your CIB record. A day-by-day guide to what happens, what it costs, your rights, and how to fix it.

Short answer: If you miss your credit card payment in Bangladesh, your bank will charge a late payment fee (usually Tk 500 to Tk 1,000 plus VAT) and interest of up to 25% a year on the unpaid balance. You lose the interest-free benefit on that balance, and you may face over-limit charges. If the payment stays unpaid for more than three months, the debt can be classified as a default and reported to Bangladesh Bank’s Credit Information Bureau (CIB), which makes future loans and cards very hard to get. The bank can block your card and, in serious cases, take legal action. Paying at least the minimum amount by the due date avoids the late fee and keeps your record clean.
Below, we explain each stage in detail, with real fee examples from Bangladeshi banks, the new protections in Bangladesh Bank’s 2026 credit card policy, and step-by-step advice if you have already missed a payment.
A missed due date, and a Tk 1,700 lesson
Arif, a sales executive in Dhaka, spent Tk 50,000 on his card during Eid shopping. The statement came, the due date passed during a busy week, and he paid nothing. The next statement showed a late fee of Tk 600 plus VAT, and about Tk 1,000 in interest. “I had the money in my account,” he says. “I just forgot. One missed date cost me more than a dinner for the whole family.”
Arif’s mistake was cheap compared with what happens if a missed payment turns into months of non-payment. Here is the full picture.
What happens, stage by stage
| When | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Day after the due date | Late payment fee is charged if you did not pay the minimum. Interest starts on the unpaid balance. |
| First few days | SMS, email or call reminders from the bank. |
| Next statement | Late fee, interest and VAT appear on the bill. If interest and fees push you over your limit, an over-limit fee may be added. |
| Around 30 to 60 days | More calls; the bank may reduce your limit or block the card for new spending. |
| Over 3 months unpaid | Under Bangladesh Bank’s loan classification rules, overdue loans can be classified as substandard, and the default shows on your CIB report. |
| 6 to 12 months | Classification can move to doubtful, then bad or loss. The bank may use money in your other accounts with it, if your card terms allow, and pursue recovery. |
| Long-term default | The bank may take legal action to recover the money. A bad CIB record follows you to every bank and financial institution. |
Each bank’s exact process is set out in its card terms and schedule of charges, so the timing can vary.
1. You pay a late payment fee
Banks charge a fixed late fee if you do not pay at least the minimum amount due by the due date. Examples from published schedules of charges:
| Card | Late payment fee | Source |
|---|---|---|
| BRAC Bank Visa Cashback, Platinum, Gold | Tk 600 | BRAC Bank schedule of charges |
| BRAC Bank Classic | Tk 500 | BRAC Bank schedule of charges |
| BRAC Bank Signature, World, Infinite | Tk 1,000 | BRAC Bank schedule of charges |
| Dhaka Bank Visa Signature | Tk 1,000 (USD 15 on the dollar side) | Dhaka Bank card page |
VAT at 15% is usually added. Under Bangladesh Bank’s 2026 credit card policy, a late fee can be charged only once per billing cycle, The Daily Ittefaq reported.
2. Interest starts on what you owe
When you pay your full statement balance by the due date, you pay no interest on purchases. If you pay less than the full balance, interest is charged on the amount left unpaid. Bangladesh Bank caps credit card interest at 25% a year, and the cap applies only to the unpaid balance, not the full bill. BRAC Bank’s schedule of charges, for example, says interest accrues on the balance remaining after the payment due date and is posted in the next statement.
What one missed payment costs
| Scenario on a Tk 50,000 bill | Cost for one month (our calculation) |
|---|---|
| Paid in full on time | Tk 0 |
| Paid only the minimum (Tk 2,500) on time | About Tk 990 interest; no late fee |
| Paid nothing | About Tk 1,042 interest + Tk 690 late fee with VAT = about Tk 1,730 |
Calculations assume 25% annual interest, a 5% minimum payment and a Tk 600 late fee. Your bank’s terms may differ.
3. You may go over your limit
Interest and fees are added to your balance. If you were close to your limit, they can push you over it, which can trigger an over-limit charge (Tk 1,000 on many BRAC Bank cards) and decline new purchases.
4. Your CIB record can be damaged
This is the most serious long-term effect. Every bank and financial institution in Bangladesh reports loans, including credit cards, to the Credit Information Bureau (CIB) at Bangladesh Bank, and checks your CIB report before giving you a loan or card.
From April 2025, Bangladesh Bank’s rules classify loans as substandard when overdue for more than three months, doubtful at six to twelve months and bad or loss after twelve months, The Financial Express reported. A classified credit card debt on your CIB report can stop you from getting a home loan, car loan, personal loan or another card, at any bank, until it is resolved.
A single payment that is a few days late and then cleared usually does not become a classified default. The danger is letting it run for months.
5. Recovery and legal action
If the debt stays unpaid, the bank will try to recover it through calls, letters and visits, may use funds in your other accounts with the same bank where your card agreement allows this, and can go to court to recover the money. Settling early, before legal action, is almost always cheaper.
Your rights as a cardholder
Bangladesh Bank’s 2026 credit card policy, which replaced the 2004 guidelines, gives cardholders important protections, The Daily Ittefaq reported:
- No harassment: banks and recovery agents may not threaten or harass you, physically or mentally.
- Privacy: your family, friends and referees must not be dragged into the matter.
- Office hours: recovery calls and visits must stay within standard office hours.
- One late fee per cycle: you cannot be charged the late fee repeatedly in the same billing cycle.
- Interest cap: no more than 25% a year, and only on the unpaid balance.
- Notice of changes: at least 30 days’ notice before changes to interest or charges.
If a bank breaks these rules, complain first to the bank’s complaint cell in writing. If it is not resolved, you can complain to Bangladesh Bank’s Financial Integrity and Customer Services Department.
Already missed a payment? Do this now
- Pay as soon as you can. Even a late payment stops the problem growing. Pay the full balance if possible, or at least the minimum due.
- Call the bank. If it was your first slip, ask politely whether the late fee can be waived. Many banks consider this for customers with a good record.
- If you cannot pay, ask for a plan. Ask about converting the balance into an EMI plan, a lower payment arrangement or a settlement. Get any agreement in writing.
- Stop using the card until the balance is under control.
- Keep records of every payment, call and letter.
- Get a clearance letter once the debt is fully paid, and check that your CIB status has been updated before applying for new credit.
How to make sure it never happens
- Set up auto-debit for the full statement balance from your salary account. Most banks offer this in their app.
- Set phone reminders three days before each due date.
- Pay through any channel your bank allows: its app, MFS apps like bKash, internet banking, BEFTN, ATMs or cash deposit machines. Allow time for transfers from other banks to arrive.
- Keep spending below what you can repay in one month.
- Update your phone number and email with the bank so you receive every statement.

Back to Arif
Arif paid the full balance the day he saw the second statement, then called the bank. Because it was his first late payment in three years, the bank reversed the late fee, though not the interest. That evening he set up auto-debit. “The interest I can live with as a lesson,” he says. “I never want to see my name on a CIB report.”

Frequently asked questions
What is the late fee for a missed credit card payment in Bangladesh?
Usually Tk 500 to Tk 1,000 plus 15% VAT, depending on the card. Under Bangladesh Bank’s 2026 rules, it can be charged only once per billing cycle.
Will one late payment affect my CIB report?
A payment that is a few days late and then cleared usually does not become a classified default. Loans are classified as substandard when overdue for more than three months, and that is what seriously damages your CIB record.
Does paying the minimum amount avoid the late fee?
Yes. Paying at least the minimum due by the due date avoids the late fee, but interest is still charged on the unpaid balance.
What is the maximum credit card interest rate in Bangladesh?
25% a year, under Bangladesh Bank’s 2026 credit card policy, charged only on the unpaid balance.
Can the bank harass me for a missed payment?
No. Banks and their recovery agents may not threaten or harass you, must keep your family and referees out of it, and must contact you only during office hours. Complain to the bank and then to Bangladesh Bank if this happens.
Can I ask the bank to waive the late fee?
Yes. Many banks will consider a one-time waiver for customers with a good payment history, especially if you pay quickly and ask politely.
What if I cannot pay at all?
Contact the bank before the debt reaches three months overdue. Ask about an EMI plan, a reduced payment arrangement or a settlement, and get any agreement in writing.

How we reported this
We used Bangladesh Bank’s March 2026 credit card policy as reported by The Daily Ittefaq; Bangladesh Bank’s loan classification rules effective April 2025 as reported by The Financial Express; BRAC Bank’s published schedule of charges for credit cards; and Dhaka Bank’s Visa Signature card page. Cost examples are our own calculations and assume a 25% interest rate, 5% minimum payment and Tk 600 late fee. Practices such as fee waivers vary by bank.
