How to Open a Payoneer Account in Bangladesh (2027): Step-by-Step Guide, Fees, Benefits and Drawbacks
Everything Bangladeshi freelancers need to know about Payoneer: how to sign up step by step, documents, fees, withdrawing to bank or bKash, benefits, disadvantages, and how to avoid account problems.

For most Bangladeshi freelancers, the first big question after landing a foreign client is not “how do I do the work?” It is “how do I actually get paid?” With PayPal still unavailable for receiving money in Bangladesh, Payoneer has become one of the most common answers. This guide explains, step by step, how to open a Payoneer account from Bangladesh, what it costs, how to bring the money home, and the honest downsides nobody mentions in YouTube tutorials.
Disclosure: this article includes a Payoneer referral link. If you sign up through it and meet Payoneer’s conditions, Dhaka Debates may receive a reward from Payoneer, at no cost to you. It does not affect our assessment; we cover the disadvantages in full below.
What is Payoneer?
Payoneer is a global payments company that lets freelancers and businesses receive money from clients and online platforms in other countries, hold it in foreign currencies, and withdraw it to a local bank account or mobile wallet. Think of it as an international account that sits between your foreign client and your Bangladeshi bank.
With a Payoneer account, you can typically:
- Get paid by marketplaces such as Fiverr, Upwork and many others that support Payoneer.
- Get receiving account details in currencies like US dollars, euros and pounds, so clients can pay you as if you had a local account in their country.
- Send payment requests to direct clients, who can pay by card or bank transfer.
- Receive money free from other Payoneer users.
- Withdraw to a bank account in Bangladesh, or to bKash.
Why Bangladeshi freelancers use Payoneer
The short answer: the options are limited. As of mid-2026, a government minister told parliament that efforts to bring PayPal and other payment services to Bangladesh were still continuing, with no launch date. Until that changes, freelancers rely on a mix of platform bank transfers, wire transfers, and services like Payoneer.
Payoneer fills a specific gap: it works with many marketplaces, gives you foreign receiving accounts for direct clients, and connects to bKash, the country’s largest mobile wallet. For a full comparison of all the ways to get paid, see our guide on how Dhaka freelancers get paid from abroad.
Benefits of Payoneer for Bangladeshi users
- Free to open. There is no sign-up fee.
- Works with major marketplaces. Many freelance and e-commerce platforms pay directly into Payoneer.
- Foreign receiving accounts. Direct clients in the US, UK or Europe can pay you through a familiar local bank transfer, which many prefer over international wires.
- Payment requests. You can send a professional invoice-style request, and clients can pay by card or bank debit.
- Free transfers between Payoneer users. Useful if your client or agency also uses Payoneer.
- Withdraw to bKash, any time. According to bKash, you can withdraw from Tk 1,000 up to Tk 2,50,000 per transaction directly to your wallet, and Payoneer says these withdrawals are processed in real time.
- Withdraw to a local bank account in taka.
- Hold multiple currencies, and choose when to convert.
- A clear transaction record, useful for showing income for tax, loans or visas.
Disadvantages and risks you should know
Payoneer is useful, but it is not perfect. Before you sign up, understand the downsides:
- Fees add up. Withdrawals and currency conversion carry charges, and the exchange rate is not the pure market rate. Over a year, this can cost thousands of taka.
- No 2.5% government incentive on bKash withdrawals. bKash states that the government’s 2.5% remittance incentive does not apply to Payoneer withdrawals into bKash.
- Annual fee if you are not very active. Payoneer charges an annual account fee of $29.95 in some situations, depending on how much you receive in 12 months. Check the fee page inside your account for your exact terms.
- Account reviews and holds. Payoneer can ask for extra documents, limit or freeze accounts during reviews, especially if something looks unusual. While under review, you may not be able to access your money.
- Strict name matching. Your Payoneer name must match your ID, your bank account and, for bKash, your bKash account. Small mismatches cause failed withdrawals.
- Card availability. Payoneer’s prepaid card is not offered everywhere, so do not open an account expecting one.
- Customer support can be slow during busy periods or account reviews.
- Not a bank. Payoneer balances are not the same as a deposit in a Bangladeshi bank, and are not covered by Bangladesh’s deposit protection scheme. Do not use it as a long-term savings account.
Payoneer fees at a glance
Payoneer’s fees vary by country, currency and account type, and they change over time. These are the main ones, based on Payoneer’s published fee page, a Wise review of Payoneer and bKash’s Payoneer page:
| What you do | Typical fee |
|---|---|
| Open an account | Free |
| Receive from another Payoneer user | Free |
| Receive from a marketplace | Set by the marketplace (often a small fixed fee) |
| Client pays your payment request by card | About 3.2% plus $0.49 (Payoneer’s published rate in one region) |
| Client pays by US bank debit (ACH) | About 1% |
| Withdraw to a bank in Bangladesh | Payoneer lists 1% to 4% depending on region and volume; check your account |
| Withdraw to bKash | 3% conversion fee plus $1 per transaction, according to bKash |
| Annual account fee | $29.95 in some cases, depending on how much you receive |
Always check the “Fees” or “Pricing” section inside your own Payoneer account for the exact rates that apply to you.
Before you sign up: a checklist
Most rejected or frozen accounts in Bangladesh come from rushed sign-ups. Have these ready first:
- You must be 18 or older.
- A valid photo ID: National ID card (NID), passport or driving licence. Make sure the photo is clear.
- Your name exactly as on your ID, including spelling and order. Use the same spelling everywhere.
- A personal email you will keep long term, and a mobile number in your name.
- Your current address, as it appears on a document if Payoneer asks for proof.
- A Bangladeshi bank account in your own name, with the bank name, branch, account number and routing number. A savings or current account works; some freelancers use a dedicated freelancer or ERQ account.
- A real reason for the account: your freelance profile, website or marketplace account, so you can describe your work honestly.
How to open a Payoneer account in Bangladesh, step by step
There are three common ways to start: directly on Payoneer’s website (including through a referral link), through a marketplace that pays via Payoneer, or through the bKash app. The steps below cover the website route, which is the most common.
Step 1: Go to the sign-up page
Open Payoneer’s official website on your computer or phone and click “Sign up” or “Register”. Always type the address yourself or use a trusted link; fake Payoneer pages are used to steal passwords. If you want to use our referral link, it is in the section near the end of this article.
Step 2: Choose your account type
Payoneer will ask what describes you best, such as freelancer, online seller or business. Most individual freelancers choose the freelancer or individual option. If you run a registered company, choose business, and be ready to provide company documents like a trade licence.
Step 3: Enter your personal details
Fill in your first and last name exactly as on your NID or passport, your email address and date of birth. Double-check the spelling. This is the single most important step for avoiding problems later.
Step 4: Add contact details
Select Bangladesh as your country and enter your full address, city and postal code, plus your mobile number. Payoneer will send a verification code to your phone.
Step 5: Set up security
Create a strong password you do not use anywhere else, and choose a security question. Write the answer somewhere safe; you may need it to recover your account.
Step 6: Provide your ID details
Choose your ID type (NID, passport or driving licence) and enter the number. Payoneer may ask you to upload clear photos of the front and back of your ID, and sometimes a selfie, during verification.
Step 7: Add your bank account
Enter your Bangladeshi bank details: bank name, branch, account holder name, account number and routing number. The account holder name must match the name on your Payoneer account.
Step 8: Accept the terms and submit
Read the terms and conditions, accept them, and submit your application. You will get a confirmation email.
Step 9: Wait for approval and respond to requests
Payoneer reviews new applications. Approval can take from a few hours to several days. If Payoneer emails you for more documents, such as proof of address or a clearer ID photo, respond quickly and honestly. Once approved, you will receive an email confirming your account is active.
Alternative: sign up through the bKash app
According to bKash, you can go to Remittance > Payoneer > Register in the bKash app, which takes you to Payoneer’s registration page. If you already have a Payoneer account, choose Link Payoneer account, log in, and confirm with the OTP sent to your Payoneer-registered phone. Your Payoneer name must match your bKash name, and one bKash account can link to only one Payoneer account.
After approval: how to start getting paid
- Connect your marketplaces. In Fiverr, Upwork or other platforms, add Payoneer as your withdrawal method and log in to link the accounts.
- Find your receiving account details. In your Payoneer dashboard, look for receiving accounts. Share these with direct clients so they can pay you by local bank transfer in their country.
- Send payment requests. For one-off clients, create a payment request with a clear description of the work and amount.
- Keep records. Save invoices, contracts and emails. Payoneer may ask about the source of large payments, and Bangladesh Bank now accepts electronic records as proof of freelance earnings.
How to withdraw money from Payoneer to Bangladesh
You have two main options: a bank account or bKash. Here is how they compare.
| Feature | Withdraw to bank | Withdraw to bKash |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Usually 1 to 3 business days | Real time, any time |
| Fee | A percentage set by Payoneer (1% to 4% by region and volume) | 3% conversion fee plus $1 per transaction |
| Minimum | Set by Payoneer | Tk 1,000 per transaction |
| Maximum | Higher limits | Tk 2,50,000 per transaction |
| Best for | Larger amounts, savings, tax records | Small, urgent amounts |
bKash figures from bKash’s Payoneer page. Bank fees from Payoneer’s published fee page; your actual rate is shown in your account.
What you actually receive: a worked example
Using a market rate of about Tk 123.20 per dollar, here is roughly what arrives. The bKash cost uses bKash’s published 3% plus $1. For the bank route, we assume a 2% total cost for illustration.
| You withdraw | Value at market rate (Tk) | To bKash (Tk) | To bank at assumed 2% (Tk) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $200 | 24,640 | about 23,780 | about 24,150 |
| $500 | 61,600 | about 59,630 | about 60,370 |
| $1,000 | 1,23,200 | about 1,19,380 | about 1,20,740 |
Our calculation. Actual rates and fees vary.
On $1,000, the bank route in this example leaves about Tk 1,350 more than bKash. The lesson: use bKash for small or urgent needs, and withdraw larger amounts to your bank. And because each bKash withdrawal carries a $1 fixed fee, fewer, larger withdrawals are cheaper than many small ones.
Why Payoneer accounts get rejected or blocked, and how to avoid it
- Name mismatch between Payoneer, your ID and your bank or bKash. Use exactly the same spelling everywhere.
- Using someone else’s documents or bank account. Never open an account for a friend or use a relative’s bank account. It breaks the rules and can lead to permanent closure.
- Multiple accounts. Keep one personal account.
- VPNs and fake locations. Logging in from different countries through a VPN can trigger security reviews.
- Unclear or blurry documents. Upload sharp, complete photos.
- Unexplained payments. Receiving money that does not match your described work, or from people you do not know, can lead to holds. Only accept payments for real work.
- Buying or selling accounts. “Verified Payoneer accounts” sold on Facebook are a scam and a legal risk.
Keeping your account safe
- Turn on two-step verification.
- Never share your password, OTP or security answers, not even with “Payoneer support” on Facebook or WhatsApp. Real support will not ask for them.
- Always log in by typing the official address, not through links in messages.
- Keep your email account secure, since it can be used to reset your Payoneer password.
- Do not leave large balances sitting in Payoneer for long. Withdraw regularly.
Rules, tax and record-keeping in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has made freelance earnings easier to handle in 2026. In July, Bangladesh Bank eased its foreign exchange rules for freelancers, accepting electronic records such as platform statements as proof of earnings, allowing service export earnings up to $20,000 without a formal declaration, and letting IT freelancers keep up to 50% of earnings in foreign currency.
On tax, IT freelancing income has been tax-exempt, and the FY2026-27 budget proposed extending the exemption to all freelancing income. You may still need to file a tax return and show the income as exempt. Our guide to tax return basics explains how filing works, and keeping your Payoneer statements makes it much easier.
Alternatives to Payoneer
Payoneer is not the only option, and for some people it is not the cheapest:
- Direct to local bank from the platform. Upwork, for example, offers a direct-to-local-bank option in taka for a small flat fee, which can be cheaper than routing through Payoneer.
- Wire transfer (SWIFT). Reliable for large payments, but expensive for small ones.
- Bank freelancer and ERQ accounts. Several Bangladeshi banks now offer accounts designed for freelancers, which can receive foreign payments directly.
- Remittance apps, for clients or family sending money to you personally. Our guide to remittance fees compared shows how to find the cheapest.
Whatever you choose, avoid hundi and informal “dollar buyers”. You lose any legal protection and the record of your income. We explain why in hundi vs legal remittance.

The invitation says new users can get a reward of up to US$250. Please read the conditions before counting on it. Under Payoneer’s Refer Your Network terms, the reward is paid only if you are a new user, pass Payoneer’s verification, register through the referral link, and reach a set volume of eligible transactions within a time limit after signing up. The terms we reviewed set this target at a high level (US$30,000 within 150 days), though Payoneer says the threshold can vary. Many new freelancers will not reach it, so treat the reward as a possible bonus, not a reason to sign up.
As disclosed at the top, Dhaka Debates may receive a reward from Payoneer for qualifying sign-ups. You can also sign up directly on Payoneer’s website or through the bKash app if you prefer.
Making the most of your earnings
Getting paid is the start, not the finish. Freelance income goes up and down, so build habits that protect you:
- Set aside a fixed share of every payment before spending.
- Build an emergency fund of three to six months’ expenses.
- Invest regularly. Our guide on how to start investing with small money shows where to begin.
- If you sell products online, see our look at how an online clothing business really works.
This article is general information, not financial or legal advice. Payoneer’s fees, features, referral terms and availability can change, and may differ by country and account. Check the latest terms on Payoneer’s website and inside your account before signing up or withdrawing.
