What Is RTGS? How Bangladesh Moves Big Money in Minutes
Paying for a flat, a car, a supplier or a land deposit? RTGS is the system Bangladesh uses to move Tk 1 lakh or more between banks in minutes. Here is how it works, the hours, the fee, the limits, and when to use it instead of NPSB or BEFTN.

When a large amount of money has to reach another bank today, not tomorrow, Bangladeshi banks use RTGS. It is the system behind flat instalments, car purchases, land deposits, supplier payments and almost every big business transfer. Here is what RTGS is, how it works, when it is open, what it costs, and when you should use it instead of NPSB or BEFTN.
Editor’s note: Farhana and the developer in this story are illustrative, created to show how RTGS works in real life. They are not real people or companies. The rules, hours and fees come from the published sources linked in this article.
Tk 18 lakh and a Thursday deadline
Farhana, a schoolteacher in Mirpur, had been paying for a small flat for three years. The final instalment, Tk 18 lakh, was due to the developer by Thursday. If the money arrived late, the handover would slip by a month.
She first tried her banking app. It refused: the amount was far above her online transfer limit. A regular bank transfer through BEFTN might not land until the next working day, and the next working day was Sunday.
So on Thursday morning she went to her branch, filled in an RTGS form with the developer’s account details, and signed it. By lunchtime the developer’s accounts officer called: the money had arrived. The bank charged her Tk 100.
“I was carrying the cheque book in case it failed,” she said later. “I didn’t need it.”
What is RTGS?
RTGS stands for Real Time Gross Settlement. In Bangladesh it is run by Bangladesh Bank and is often called BD-RTGS. It was launched in October 2015 to move high-value payments between banks quickly and safely.
The name explains how it works:
- Real time: each payment is processed as soon as it is sent, not saved up for a later batch.
- Gross: every payment is settled on its own, in full. Banks do not net off what they owe each other first.
- Settlement: the money actually moves between the banks’ accounts at Bangladesh Bank. Once settled, the payment is final.
Because each payment settles individually through the central bank, RTGS is the safest way to move large sums. The receiving bank does not have to wait and trust that the money will come later; it is already there.
The key rules at a glance
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Minimum amount | Tk 1 lakh (Tk 100,000) for customer taka transfers. Government payments and domestic foreign currency transfers have no minimum. |
| Maximum amount | No upper cap in the RTGS system itself. Your bank’s online banking limit may be much lower, so very large amounts often go through the branch. |
| Customer hours (taka) | 10am to 5pm on working days. The last hour, 4pm to 5pm, is mainly for transfers made online, through apps or corporate platforms. |
| Customer hours (foreign currency) | 10am to 4pm on working days |
| Closed | Weekends (Friday and Saturday) and public holidays, unless Bangladesh Bank announces special opening |
| Fee | Up to Tk 100 per transfer. Some banks charge less. Ask whether VAT is added on top. |
| Speed | Usually minutes after your bank sends it |
The current hours took effect on 5 October 2025, The Financial Express reported. Banks themselves have a little longer (until 5:15pm for taka and 4:30pm for foreign currency) to settle between each other. Your own bank can close its counter for RTGS requests earlier than the official cut-off, so do not leave it until 4:55pm.
How an RTGS transfer works, step by step
- You give the instruction. Use your bank’s internet banking or app (choose RTGS as the transfer type, if offered), or fill in an RTGS form at the branch.
- Your bank checks it. It confirms you have enough balance, checks your signature or OTP, and screens the payment.
- Your bank sends it to BD-RTGS. Bangladesh Bank moves the money from your bank’s account to the receiver’s bank’s account, at once and in full.
- The receiving bank credits the account. This is usually done within minutes.
- If something is wrong, such as a wrong account number or a closed account, the receiving bank rejects it and sends the money back, normally on the same day.
What you need
- The receiver’s full account name, exactly as the bank has it
- The receiver’s account number
- The receiver’s bank, branch and routing number
- The amount, and a short purpose or reference (for example, “Flat instalment, Unit 5B”)
- Enough balance to cover the amount plus the fee
RTGS can also be used to pay a credit card bill at another bank, as long as the receiving bank accepts card payments this way.
What does RTGS cost?
Banks charge a flat fee of up to Tk 100 per RTGS transfer, whatever the amount. That makes it very cheap for large sums. Our calculation:
| Amount sent | Maximum fee | Fee as a share of the amount |
|---|---|---|
| Tk 1 lakh | Tk 100 | 0.1% |
| Tk 5 lakh | Tk 100 | 0.02% |
| Tk 10 lakh | Tk 100 | 0.01% |
| Tk 1 crore | Tk 100 | 0.001% |
Some banks charge less, or nothing, for certain customers. Check your bank’s current schedule of charges, and whether VAT is added to the Tk 100.
How big is RTGS?
In 2025, RTGS handled 12.38 million transactions worth Tk 64.98 trillion, according to Bangladesh Bank data reported by The Financial Express. That was 16% more transactions than in 2024, and the system averaged more than a million payments a month.
Put another way, the average RTGS payment in 2025 was about Tk 52 lakh (our calculation). That shows who uses it most: businesses, importers, government offices and banks themselves. But individuals buying a flat, a car or land use it too.
RTGS vs NPSB vs BEFTN
| Feature | RTGS | NPSB | BEFTN |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed | Minutes | Seconds | Same or next working day |
| Hours | Working days, 10am to 5pm | 24/7, including holidays | Working days, in sessions |
| Amount | Tk 1 lakh minimum; no system maximum | Small to medium; online limits apply | Any amount within bank limits |
| Fee (maximum) | Tk 100 | Tk 10 per internet banking transfer | No charge per transfer |
| Best for | Large, urgent payments | Urgent everyday transfers, any time | Salaries, bills, bulk and non-urgent payments |
For the other two systems, read our explainers on what NPSB is and how instant transfers work and what BEFTN is and how it works.
A simple rule
- Under Tk 1 lakh and urgent? NPSB. RTGS will not accept it.
- Tk 1 lakh or more, urgent, on a working day before the cut-off? RTGS.
- Large amount, but tomorrow is fine? BEFTN, which costs nothing per transfer.
- Large amount, urgent, on a Friday night? RTGS is closed. NPSB may work within your online limit; otherwise you will have to wait until Sunday.
RTGS vs a pay order or cheque
Many people still pay large sums with a pay order or an account-payee cheque. Both work, but they take longer to clear, and someone has to carry the paper. A pay order also costs a fee, often more than Tk 100 plus VAT, depending on the bank. With RTGS, the money arrives the same day and the record sits in both bank statements. For a property or car payment, that bank record is useful proof.
Holidays and special openings
RTGS is normally closed on weekends and public holidays. During long breaks, Bangladesh Bank sometimes keeps it open for a few hours so trade and government payments do not stop. During the Eid-ul-Adha break in May 2026, for example, it kept RTGS running from 10am to 12:45pm on two holiday dates, The Business Standard reported. If you have a large payment due around Eid, check the news or your bank for these special timings, and pay early if you can.
Common problems and how to avoid them
- Missing the cut-off. A request made after your bank’s cut-off, or on a holiday, is sent the next working day. Start before 3pm to be safe.
- Online limit too low. Your app may not allow a transfer as big as you need. Ask your bank to raise the limit in advance, or go to the branch.
- Name mismatch or wrong routing number. The transfer is returned, usually the same day, but you lose time. Ask the receiver for their details in writing, ideally from a cheque leaf or bank letter.
- Fraud. RTGS payments are final once credited. If someone sends you “new bank details” by message for a big payment, call them on a known number before you pay. This is a common trick in property and business deals.
- No confirmation. Your bank may not tell you when the money is credited. Ask the receiver to confirm, and keep the RTGS reference number from your bank.
RTGS for businesses
For businesses, RTGS is the normal way to pay suppliers, settle large invoices, pay import-related bills and move money between the company’s accounts at different banks. Corporate internet banking usually allows bigger RTGS amounts than personal apps. RTGS also handles domestic payments in foreign currency between banks, which matters for exporters and importers. If you collect money from abroad, our guide to international payment platforms for Bangladeshi businesses explains the options, and our piece on digital payment solutions covers collecting from local customers.
Back to Farhana
Farhana got her keys the following week. When her brother asked how she had moved so much money so quickly, she gave him three tips: go before lunch, carry the receiver’s details on paper, and phone the developer’s office to confirm the account number yourself. “The transfer took minutes,” she said. “Checking the details took longer, and that was the part that mattered.”

Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of RTGS?
Real Time Gross Settlement. In Bangladesh it is run by Bangladesh Bank and is called BD-RTGS.
What is the minimum RTGS amount in Bangladesh?
Tk 1 lakh for customer taka transfers. Government payments and domestic foreign currency transfers have no minimum.
Is there a maximum RTGS limit?
Not in the RTGS system itself. Your bank may set limits, especially for internet banking, so large amounts are often sent from the branch.

For customers, 10am to 5pm for taka and 10am to 4pm for foreign currency, on working days. Your bank may stop taking requests earlier.
How much is the RTGS charge?
Up to Tk 100 per transfer, whatever the amount. Some banks charge less. Ask whether VAT is added.
Does RTGS work on Friday or Saturday?
No. It works on working days only, unless Bangladesh Bank announces special opening hours. For weekend transfers, use NPSB within your limit.
What happens if I enter the wrong account details?
If the account does not exist or the details do not match, the transfer is rejected and the money is normally returned the same day. If the money reaches the wrong but valid account, contact your bank at once; recovery is not guaranteed.

How we reported this
We used Bangladesh Bank rules as reported by The Financial Express (the RTGS hours, minimum, fee and the absence of a maximum, effective October 2025, and the 2025 RTGS figures) and The Business Standard (special Eid-period timings in May 2026), plus an October 2026 summary of central bank rules by Elevate Pay, a UNB explainer on RTGS, and a bank customer FAQ on returns and timing. Some older sources give earlier hours (10am to 3pm) or lower limits; we use the current rules and note that banks may set their own limits. The fee percentages and the average payment size are our own calculations. Farhana is illustrative, not a real person.
